New Basement Organization

What fun, what fun. This was a project on a brand-new basement. This basement is likely to be remodeled in the very-near future, so that helped us keep certain details in scope (i.e. it’s not worth it to purchase a bunch of product to organize until the remodel/look is decided and done). We tried to work exclusively with what they had there.

While it is currently mostly a storage space, the clients had some one specific priority: make sure it is functional for people to be down there. This meant clear pathways, clear zones for each type of item, and not keeping them consolidated in one spot.

Here were the other items that we worked on:

Selling Unneeded Items - while they had done a great job downsizing their stuff before the move, there were a few items that were hard to get rid of: an electric lawn mower, and some staging items from the sale of their previous home. We listed those prior to starting the organization, to allow us to have time for buyers to come into the picture. In all, we sold everything except for a few staging paintings.

Quick Grab Area - the basement had a wonderful nook right at the bottom of the stairs, perfect for a row of shelving. We organized all of the items you often need to grab often: fans, heaters, luggage, sporting equipment.

Gaming Area - the clients have a wonderful gaming table perfect for game night or Dungeons and Dragons (oh heck yes). They also had amazing rugs that fit the scale of the space. We saved space by unrolling the carpet, and setting up the table and chairs. Game night ready.

Collector Organization - one of the clients is an avid comic book collector. They were not ready to unpack all of that until the renovation, but tasked us with consolidating everything into one area.

Holiday Storage - the client has such great outdoor holiday items, and they fit so well into the scope of this basement (1,000 sq. ft). We organized it all together for ready access when the season hits.

Kids Play Area - because they are often babysitting nieces and nephews, the clients wanted to make sure there was a dedicated space for the kids to play (because we all know that basements are the BEST places to play, amirite?). We used some of the additional rugs to set a sunny space for the kids to craft, play with vintage toys, or race Landshark wheelies around the basement. We also made sure there was a clear, safe path around the basement for crazy races :).

Garden Storage - while they will have some work to do on landscaping, the clients wanted to make sure their extensive gardening supplies were out of the way of construction. We primarily consolidated and stacked it so it didn’t take up too much footprint.

Seating Area - we used another great rug to create an area for sitting downstairs (for watching the races!). It faces the sunny outdoors and sits right in the middle of the racetrack.

Workout Area - one of our clients really loves an at-home workout, so they wanted a special place to put equipment (and potentially build on it). We setup the TV, a table, the weights and other exercise items.

Total Organizing Time - 8 hours

Product Budget - $0
